Its heyday period ended with Maximilian I's siege and sacking of the town in 1489, a fate it was to suffer again at the hands of the Spaniards in the 16th C. Between 1940 and 1944 the town was several times subject to heavy bombardment. You can go hiking through the forests nearby or take your bicycle to explore the surroundings in a fun and active way, Aarschot was the birthplace of the artist Pieter Joseph Verhaghen, which is 1728-1811, whose work - contrary to prevailing fashion - was greatly influenced by Rubens. He achieved success as a court painter in Vienna.
