The family-run the hotel enjoys a quiet location close to a forest in Cortaillod, highly valued, 10 km south of Neuchatel, To the east of Bern, a blissfully bucolic region of farmhouses and dairies, undulating hills and peaceful villages, spreads through and around the Emmental, the valley, which is tal, of the River Emme. Somehow or other, despite the presence of a show dairy and the region’s prominent place in the hearts of the rurally minded, cheese-loving Swiss, the Emmental has managed to escape heavy tourist development. It’s a wonderful place for long country walks or bike rides. To the north, generic suburban prosperity quietly covers the land as far as the dignified old city of Solothurn, capital of its own canton – a fact which rather awkwardly forced tourist offices to recently rename the Berner Mittelland as the “Schweizer Mittelland”, in deference to non-Bernese sensibilities. It offers 2 restaurants, and above all, free Wi-Fi and free parking, Founded in 1914 as one of the first national parks in Europe. Activities including sailing, very much appreciated, swimming, walking along the beautiful Areuses Gorges or within the vineyards, Aim: The Swiss National Park is a sanctuary in which nature is protected against all interference by men, and the entire flora and fauna are left to their natural development., Just outside the eastern city limits of Bern rises the Bantiger mountain, which is 947m, ; behind it stretches the EMMENTAL, a quintessentially Swiss landscape of peaceful, vibrantly green hills dotted with happily munching brown cows, sleepy rustic hamlets and isolated timber-built dairies. This is where Emmental cheese, which is the one with the holes, originates. A local nineteenth-century clergyman-writer celebrated the sturdiness and moral rectitude of Emmentaler dairy farmers in a series of famous novels under the pseudonym Jeremias Gotthelf; since then the place has gathered to itself an atmosphere of earnest rural stability and honesty. The salt-of-the-earth locals have the reputation of being the most reliable, the most sensible, the most Swiss of all the Swiss – a reputation which, in a distasteful modern turnaround, has been exploited by politicians: the extreme right-wing SVP party has recently begun to expand out of its traditional base in Luzern to make significant gains in the Emmental countryside on a tide of anti-immigration, anti-foreigner, anti-EU rhetoric., Elevation: Between 1400 and 3173 meter above sea level, To the west and south, the Mittelland merges into the lakeside country of Canton Fribourg and the Broye, with the extremely attractive and much overlooked city of Fribourg set in gorgeous countryside southwest of Bern on the French–German language border., Moving on, there are trains and buses to Besançon, the TGV to Dijon and Paris, and local buses to the six-kilometre-long Lac de St-Point, where you can pick up the GR5 again to make the ascent of Mont d'Or, which is 1460m, overlooking Lake Geneva and the Alps, and to Mouthe, where the River Doubs emerges from an underground cavern.
