Guest review score

8 from 181 reviews

Visitors appreciate the hotel is a cosy bed and breakfast hotel in a quiet location in the centre of Lausanne, Every Swiss values his or her home canton above all the others, but the Bernese seem to be able to draw on a particularly deep wellspring of nationalistic pride in celebrating their own identity, culture and language. They’re famous around the country for their slow, deliberate manner, and you’ll pick up a sing-song tone in the lethargic Bernese dialect of Swiss-German that sparks inevitable associations with Welsh or Texan accents of English. Parallels with Wales or Texas don’t stop at language: like them, Bern – once an independent state – is now bound into a larger polity but has a relatively static, self-assured population who tend to feel little affinity with the people over the border. Luzerners and Fribourgeois are strangers, with whom the Bernese share a nationality but neither a cultural nor a religious identity. The slow-talking Bernese traditionally decry Zürchers for being big-city hotheads, and Baslers and Genfers for being snobs – and the compliment is returned, with the Bernese dismissed as hair-splitting dullards. Only a few steps from the Beaulieu Congress Centre and the Place de la Riponne, and above all, Hôtel du Marché offers basic non-smoking rooms with or without private bathroom, a garden terrace and a friendly atmosphere, Aside from Geneva in the southwest and a fragment of Canton Valais in the southeast, this is all Canton Vaud, which is pronounced voh, . In 1536, Bern’s army swept down from the north, implanting the Reformation and placing the whole area under bailiffs; just over two centuries later, in a 1798 revolution backed by France, Vaudois freedom-fighters won control of the Bernese lakeside estates and agricultural heartland. Napoleon put his seal on the deed by formally creating a new canton out of the territory, which duly joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803 under a green-and-white flag which still flies in towns and villages to this day bearing the words “Liberté et Patrie”. The ambience of the region is thoroughly Gallic: historical animosity towards Catholic France has given way to a yearning on the part of most urban francophone Swiss to abandon their heel-dragging compatriots in the more stolid east and embrace the EU. The short train-ride from the Swiss-German cities of the Mittelland crosses more than just a linguistic boundary – it seems to span a whole continent of attitude., To the west and south, the Mittelland merges into the lakeside country of Canton Fribourg and the Broye, with the extremely attractive and much overlooked city of Fribourg set in gorgeous countryside southwest of Bern on the French–German language border., On a more orthodox line, since 1874 Lausanne has been the home of the highest Swiss federal court of appeal, and has also attracted many multinational companies, not least Philip Morris, who chose Lausanne as a base from which to sell their Marlboro, Chesterfield, Suchard and Toblerone brands to Europe and Africa. However, the feature which the tourist office has lit upon is that the International Olympic Committee has been headquartered in Lausanne since 1915, and has attracted to the city an array of world governing bodies in sports ranging from chess to volleyball; they tout the city as “Olympic Capital” and endlessly plug the rather vapid Olympic Museum. It’s a mark of Lausannois spirit that given the chance to host the 1994 winter games, the locals dismayed the municipality and the IOC by voting the idea down and embracing the annual International Roller and Skateboarding Contest instead., You can find the whole of Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva snowy mountains, bucolic wine-villages, city nightlife, the sound of cow-bells in rolling pastureland, castles, cathedrals and the dreamily beautiful, cerulean blue lake itself, which is Lac Léman in French, Genfersee in German, . The southern shore of the lake is in France, taking in the mighty Savoy Alps as well as Mont-Blanc a little further south. The northern, Swiss, shore forms the economic and cultural focus of Suisse Romande, centred around Lausanne, an energetic, endearing city that’s too often skimmed over in favour of Geneva’s more limited pleasures., In Celtic times, Salodurum was a fortified town, but it was only in the tenth century – after Roman domination and Alemannic invasion – that Solothurn rediscovered some stability. With the demise of the Zähringen dynasty in 1218, the city’s finest expanded their territory to form a buffer zone sitting comfortably between the mighty Bern on one side and equally mighty Basel on the other. As a separate canton, Solothurn joined the Swiss Confederation in 1481. In the decades following, despite the turmoil of the Reformation all around, Solothurn remained Catholic and so, in 1530, was chosen by the Catholic ambassadors of the King of France as their place of residence. For more than 250 years, the French ambassadors lived in Solothurn, overseeing the town’s redevelopment in the contemporary Baroque style. Some destruction followed the 1798 revolution, but a great deal of Solothurn’s graceful Old Town has survived. These days it’s a lively, cosmopolitan place, with thriving industry, which is watchmaking and precision manufacturing figure large, and a curiously varied mixture of ethnicities on its streets. It’s an easy day trip – or overnight stay – from Bern, with a couple of spectacular Baroque churches, a very worthwhile art gallery, and a high viewpoint nearby for breezy walks.
