Carlton Rioja4 Star Hotel

Gran Vía Del Rey Don Juan Carlos I, nº 5, 26002 Logroño

Guest review score

7.9 from 175 reviews

Clients appreciate the hotel offers spacious, very much appreciated, air-conditioned rooms with a TV and minibar, BAYONNE stands back some 6km from the Atlantic, a position that until recently protected it from any real exploitation by tourism. It bestrides the confluence of the River Adour, which rises to the east in the region of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, and the much smaller Nive, whose source is the Basque Pyrenees above St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. When, looking for a Bayonne hotel, have a look at this website. Although purists dispute whether it's truly a Basque rather than a Gascon city, it is the effective economic and political capital of the Pays Basque. To the lay person, at least, there seems no doubt about its Basque flavour, with its tall timber-frame houses and woodwork painted in the peculiarly Basque tones of green and red. Here, too, Basques in flight from Franco's Spain came without hesitation to seek refuge amongst their own. For many years the Petit Bayonne quarter on the right bank of the Nive was a hotbed of Basque nationalism, until the French government clamped down on such dangerous tendencies. Situated in the centre of Logroño, highly valued, the capital of the La Rioja region, this functional hotel is 200 metres from Espolón Square, Biarritz, which is Miarritze, . It offers free Wi-Fi and classic-style rooms, France > Pyrénées > Pays Basque > Côte Basque > Biarritz. Room service is also available, Although there are no great sights in Bayonne, it's a pleasure to wander the narrow streets of the old town, bisected by the river Nive and still encircled by Vauban's defences. The cathedral is on the west bank in Grand Bayonne, and the museums east of the river in Petit Bayonne. The private bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer, Immediately north of Biarritz, ANGLET sprawls up the coast from the Pointe St-Martin to the mouth of the Adour. There's nothing to see except for two superb beaches – the Chambre d'Amour, so named for two lovers trapped in their trysting place by the tide, and the Sables d'Or, much favoured by the surfers and with boards for rent. Here, too, the swimming is very dangerous, so do heed the warning signs. There is a restaurant at the the hotel, and above all, and guests can enjoy light meals in the café-bar, The dominant climatic influence of the Eastern Pyrenees is the Mediterranean. The climate is hotter and drier here, and the landscape more arid. Mediterranean plants like the cistus, broom and thyme make their appearance, and the lower slopes of the hills are planted with vines. The way of life is laid-back and outdoor-oriented. The proximity of Spain is evident, too, and much of the region is Catalan, definitively incorporated into France only in 1659. As with the rest of the Pyrenees, the countryside is spectacular, and densely networked with well-organized Hiking trails. The historical sights, with the exception of the prehistoric caves at Niaux and the Cathar castle of Montségur, are most richly concentrated in the east towards the coast, in what is essentially French Catalonia, comprising Roussillon and La Cerdagne, which is Rosilló and La Cerdanya, . Carlton Rioja is a 5-minute walk from the cathedral in Logroño, A few minutes by rail or road from Bayonne, BIARRITZ was, until forty years ago, the Monte Carlo of the Atlantic coast, transformed by Napoléon III in the mid-nineteenth century into a playground for monarchs, aristos and glitterati. With the rise of the Côte d'Azur during the 1960s, however, the place went into seemingly terminal decline. It's only during the last decade that the city has been rediscovered by Parisian yuppies and the international surfing fraternity, who together fuel a respectable nightlife. For a stay in a Cityhotels, have a search on this website. The Carlton operates a 24-hour reception with a tour desk where trips can be organised, You can catch a #6 or #9 bus here from the central stops in Biarritz, or walk the distance in about thirty minutes, along avenue de l'Impératrice, avenue MacCroskey, then second left down to the seaside boulevard des Plages. Anglet has a HI hostel at 19 rte des Vignes, which is tel 05.59.58.70.07, auberge-jeune.Anglet@wanadoo.fr; closed mid-Nov to mid-Feb; STAB bus #4, direction "Bayonne-Sainsontan" from Biarritz, . There's also a campsite, the Camping de Parme, on Route de l'Aviation, which is tel 05.59.23.03.00, in the Brindos neighbourhood. For eating and drinking, the most notable seaside establishments are the Havana Café at Chambre d'Amour, a permanently crowded bar that serves plats du jour at lunch for under €8 and the nearby Café Bleu, more of a proper restaurant with a menu for €12.95, which is closed Wed Sept–June, . Inland, choose between long-running Udala at 165 av de l'Adour, for traditional Basque seafood, which is menu €15, à la carte €22,, and the popular La Fleur de Sel, 5 av de la Forêt, which is closed Sun eve & Wed; weekday lunch menu €13.70, otherwise €22.60,, in the Chiberta pine forest, serving more nouvelle. Luggage can be stored for up to 2 months and, and above all, for an extra charge, it can be forwarded to another destination, The city's origins go back to Roman times, since when its Latin name of Lapurdum, corrupted to Labourd, which is Lapurdi,, has been extended to cover the whole of this westernmost of the three Basque provinces. For three centuries until 1453 and the end of the Hundred Years War, it enjoyed prosperity and security under English domination, and this wealth was consolidated when, in the sixteenth century, Sephardic Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition arrived, bringing their chocolate-manufacturing trade with them. The city reached the peak of its commercial success in the eighteenth century, when it was also a centre of the armaments industry, which is it gave its name to the bayonet, . Later, its prestige suffered a blow in the 1789 Revolution when the anti-regionalist, centralizing Paris government subsumed the three Basque provinces under a single département, with its capital at Pau. More recently, economic activity has been based on the processing of by-products from the natural gas field at Lacq near Pau, although this has recently been through some hard times, leaving Bayonne with a higher-than-national-average level of unemployment. Laurel Street, very much appreciated, well known for its wines, is also a short walk away, These issues don't immediately impinge on the visitor, however, and first impressions are likely to be favourable. It's a small-scale, easily manageable city which can be explored on foot rather than bus, and, as the hub of all major road and rail routes from the north and east, it's worth considering as a base for a seaside sojourn., The Cathédrale Ste-Marie, which is Mon–Sat 7.30am–noon & 3–7pm, Sun 3.30–6.30pm,, on the magnolia-shaded place Pasteur, with its twin towers and steeple rising with airy grace above the houses, is best seen from a distance. Up close, the yellowish stone reveals bad weathering, with most of the decorative detail lost. Inside, its most impressive features are the height of the nave and some sixteenth-century glass, set off by the prevailing gloom. Like other southern Gothic cathedrals of the period, which is around 1260,, it was based on more famous northern models, in this case Soissons and Reims. On the south side is a quiet, secretive cloister, which is daily 9am–12.30pm & 2–6/7pm,, with a lawn, cypress trees and beds of begonias., The smartest streets in town are those around the cathedral: rue d'Espagne, the old commercial centre, heading south, and rue de la Monnaie, leading into rue Port-Neuf, with its aromatic pâtisseries and confiseries, running north. Southwest of the cathedral, along rue des Faures and the streets above the old walls, there is a distinctly Spanish feel, with washing strung at the windows and strains of music drifting from dark interiors.
