Hotel San Miguel2 Star Hotel

San Miguel, 28, 50001 Zaragoza

Guest review score

7.1 from 170 reviews

Tourist information can be provided at the 24-hour reception, From humble beginnings as a crossing on the Gave de Pau, which is "Gave" roughly translates as valley, for flocks en route to and from the mountains, PAU became the capital of the ancient viscountcy of Béarn in 1464, and of the French part of the kingdom of Navarre in 1512. In 1567 its sovereign, Henri d'Albret, married the sister of the king of France, Marguerite d'Angoulême, friend and protector of artists and intellectuals and herself the author of a celebrated Boccaccio-like tale, which is the Heptameron,, who transformed the town into a centre of the arts and nonconformist thinking. For a stay in a Pau hotel, have a search on this website. Ideally located in the commercial and historical centre of Zaragoza, highly valued, this hotel offers simple rooms with satellite TV, a private bathroom and air conditioning, LOURDES, about 30km southeast of Pau, has just one function. Over seven million Catholic pilgrims arrive here each year, and the town is totally given over to looking after and exploiting them. Lourdes was hardly more than a village before 1858, when Bernadette Soubirous, the 14-year-old daughter of an ex-miller, had the first of eighteen visions of the Virgin Mary in the so-called Grotte de Massabielle by the Gave de Pau. Since then, Lourdes has grown a great deal, and is now one of the biggest attractions in this part of France, many of its visitors hoping for a miraculous cure for conventionally intractable ailments. For a stay in a Lourdes hotel, have a search on this website. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Hotel San Miguel, The least-expected thing about Pau is its English connection, which dates from the arrival of Wellington and his troops after the defeat of Marshal Soult at Orthez in 1814. Seduced by its climate and persuaded of its curative powers by the Scottish doctor Alexander Taylor, the English flocked to Pau throughout the nineteenth century, bringing along their peculiar cultural obsessions – fox-hunting, horse-racing, polo, croquet, cricket, golf, which is the first eighteen-hole course in continental Europe in 1860 and the first in the world to admit women,, tearooms and parks. When the rail line arrived here in 1866, the French came, too: writers and artists like Victor Hugo, Stendhal and Lamartine, as well as the socialites. The first French rugby club opened here in 1902, after which the sport spread throughout the southwest. During the 1950s, natural gas was discovered at nearby Lacq, bringing new jobs and subsidiary industries, as well as massive production of sulphur-dioxide-based pollution, now reduced by filtration but still substantial. In addition, there's a well-respected university, founded in 1972, whose eight thousand or so students give the town a youthful buzz. The Teatro Principal is less than a 5-minute walk, Twenty minutes away by train to the north, TARBES is a relatively dull town dominated by its history as a military base, but useful for visiting Lourdes or launching into the mountains to the south. The airport midway between Tarbes and Lourdes gets busy in winter with charter ski flights. If you are looking for a Tarbes hotel, look at this website. The town's only real highlight is the Napoleonic stud farm, Les Haras, entered from chemin de Mauhourat, which is guided visits by appointment only: July & Aug Mon–Fri 10am–noon & 2–5pm, plus occasional days otherwise; last tour 1hr before closing; tel 05.62.56.30.80; €5.50,, best known for the cheval Tarbais, bred from English and Moorish stock as a cavalry horse. You can watch them drilling during July and August at 3.15pm. World War I buffs may also want to visit the house, at 2 rue de la Victoire, where Maréchal Foch, supreme Allied commander in World War I, was born, which is guided tours Mon & Thurs–Sun: May–Sept 9am–noon & 2–6.30pm; Oct–April 9am–noon & 2–5pm; €4,, containing a dull repository of. Car rental can also be organised and private parking is available at a nearby location, The parallel north–south valleys of the Aspe and Ossau are the central Pyrenees at their most sauvage, and the region in which the Pyrenean brown bear most tenaciously resists extinction. About six survive on the slopes of the valleys, in the Cirque de Lescun and in the adjoining parts of Spain. La Seo Cathedral is 200 metres from the hotel and 300 metres from the Basílica del Pilar, Pau lies within easy reach of numerous small, picturesque villages in northwest Béarn, as well as the GR65 footpath that runs some 60km down to the Spanish border. Visitors appreciate the hotel is situated 200 metres from a bus stop that connects with the AVE train station and central bus station, The dominant climatic influence of the Eastern Pyrenees is the Mediterranean. The climate is hotter and drier here, and the landscape more arid. Mediterranean plants like the cistus, broom and thyme make their appearance, and the lower slopes of the hills are planted with vines. The way of life is laid-back and outdoor-oriented. The proximity of Spain is evident, too, and much of the region is Catalan, definitively incorporated into France only in 1659. As with the rest of the Pyrenees, the countryside is spectacular, and densely networked with well-organized Hiking trails. The historical sights, with the exception of the prehistoric caves at Niaux and the Cathar castle of Montségur, are most richly concentrated in the east towards the coast, in what is essentially French Catalonia, comprising Roussillon and La Cerdagne, which is Rosilló and La Cerdanya, . It is 10 km from Zaragoza Airport, The first large-scale pilgrimage took place in 1873, organized by a reactionary Catholic movement called the Assomptionistes, whose avowed purpose was to stem the advancing tide of republicanism and rationalism. They took over the management of Lourdes, shoving aside the local priest who had wanted to organize the pilgrimages himself. Adroit propagandists and agitators, they sought to promote their cause by publishing a cheap mass-circulation paper called La Croix, aimed at the poor and uneducated, and by organizing these massive pilgrimages., Practically every shop is given over to the sale of indescribable religious kitsch: Bernadette in every shape and size, adorning barometers, thermometers, plastic tree trunks, key rings, empty bottles that you can fill with holy Lourdes water, bellows, candles, sweets and illuminated plastic grottoes. There's even a waxworks museum, the Musée Grévin, at 87 rue de la Grotte, which is daily: April to mid-Nov Mon–Sat 9–11.30am & 1.30–6.30pm; Sun 10–11.30am & 1.30–6.30pm; July & Aug also 8.30–10pm; €5,, with over a hundred life-size figures illustrating the lives of Bernadette and Christ. Clustered around the miraculous grotto are the churches of the Cité Réligieuse, an annexe to the town proper that sprang up last century. The first to be built was the Flamboyant Basilique du Rosaire et de l'Immaculée Conception, which is 1871–1883,, swiftly followed by the massive subterranean Basilique St-Pie-X, which claims to be able to house 20,000 people at a time. The Grotte de Massabielle itself, where Bernadette had her visions, is the focus of the pilgrimages – a moisture-blackened overhang by the riverside with a statue of the Virgin in waxwork white and baby blue., Their daughter was Jeanne d'Albret, an ardent Protestant, whose zeal offended her own subjects as well as attracting the wrath of the Catholic king of France, Charles X, thus embroiling Béarn in the Wars of Religion – whose resolution, albeit only temporary, had to await the accession to the French throne of her own son, Henri IV, in 1589. An adroit politician, he renounced his faith to facilitate this transition, quipping that "Paris is worth a Mass" and then appeasing the regional sensibilities of his Béarnais subjects by announcing that he was giving France to Béarn rather than Béarn to France. He did not incorporate Béarn into the French state; that was left to his son and successor, Louis XIII, in 1620. As Pau's most famous son, Henri acquired a suitably colourful reputation. He was baptized in traditional Béarnais style with the local Juraçon wine, and his infant lips were rubbed with garlic. In his adult life he was known as the vert-galant for his prowess as a lover. He also gave France one of its more famous recipes, poule au pot – chicken stuffed and boiled with vegetables: he is reputed to have said that he did not want anyone in his realm to be so poor as not to be able to afford a poule in the pot once a week., Tourism is less developed here, especially in the Aspe valley, because unreliable snow conditions have precluded ski-resort construction – but what tourism has failed to do, a major road-building scheme threatens to achieve. To see the best of the region you should get out your map and walk perpendicular to the line of the valleys, using the handful of refuges or camping in permitted areas along the way.
