Hostal the hotel is a 15-minute walk from the centre of Ferrol, very much appreciated, near the Naron Shopping Centre, Viana do Castelo - Nearby Locations. Visitors appreciate the hotel is a small guest house set in the Galician port of Ferrol, highly valued, on the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Route, A ferry or the bridge takes visitors across the river to the beautiful sweeping sandy beach of Praia Cabedelo that stretches as far south as the popular holiday resort of Esposende. It offers good-value accommodation with free Wi-Fi access, This City is situated in the upper reaches of the Rio Tâmega that runs to the south and east to Porto. Its present day fame lies in its reputation as a Spa Town and the local produced cured hams. The old part of town is to be found around the main square with the ruins of a 14th Century Keep. This is all that remains of the former fine castle built for Nuno Álvares Pereira. The walls of the fortress are a fine example of the principles used by the French military defensive architect Count de Vauban. Of the two churches standing on the square the Misericódia is probably the most interesting with its large 18th Century tiled panels depicting scenes from the Bible. In the Keep is a small museum with armour and memorabilia of the 1912 attack. The Museu da Região Flaviense displays an interesting collection of items from local archaeological sites. The fine sixteen-arched Roman bridge, which is four arches are hidden from view,, spanning the Rio Tâmega is from the period of the Roman development of the town by Emperor Trajan. Close to the centre is one of the warmest natural springs Spas to be found in Europe with the water reaching up to 73º C, which is 163ºF, . Rooms at the guest house are bright and comfortable, Chaves - Nearby Locations. There are regular bus services to the town centre, To the east of Viana do Castelo is Giela with a 14th Century tower as part of a 15th Century small palace. Some distance inland to the east of Viana do Castelo following the river Lima upstream is the town of Ponte de Lima, and then later the town of Ponte de Barca. The first of these towns has a 14th Century restored chapel named Anjo da Guarda and the town church Igreja da Misericórdia and is the oldest official recorded town in Portugal. Close by is the small town of Bravães with a church that is considered as a prime example of Portuguese romanticism. Both towns are attractive with many historic and architecturally interesting buildings as testaments to their past. The latter town boasts a legend connected to its Roman bridge that has since undergone many alterations. The Rio Lima was about 2000 years ago a gentle flowing stream known as Rio Leathe, which is the river of forgetfulness, . Having at the time no bridge, a Legion of Roman soldiers mutinied rather than wade across the stream. The soldiers superstitiously believed that they would forget their families and loved ones in back in Italy by wading across. Needless to say a Centurion led the way and the soldiers followed him across. However, the matter was not forgotten and a bridge was subsequently built. Just to the north of Ponte de Barca is the town of Arcos de Valdevez that was a pivot point in the founding of the independence of Portugal. Alfonso II de Leon fought his cousin Afonso Henrigues in a chivalrous tournament in its plains, and by Alfonso II losing the Portuguese nation was virtually born. Even further to the east is Soajo and Lindoso. Both towns present past images of the rugged nature of its existence with granite houses and its granite community granaries, and the later with its medieval castle. Doniños Beach is 10km away and Santiago de Compostela is 80km away, Braga - Nearby Locations. Clients appreciate the hotel has a traditional restaurant, very much appreciated, serving homemade Galician food, Legends and fables abound in the area and some of which are attached to the turbulent history of Monção. In 1368 a Spanish army had besieged the town for some time driving the occupants to near starvation. The wife of the absent leader of the town used the town's last flour to bake bread and threw it over the walls to the besiegers with suitable taunts. Believing their siege had failed the Spanish army retreated and this act is permanently recorded in the town's coat-of-arms. Just south of Monção is Brejoeira is the renown 18th Century Palace of Brejoeira. The strategic town of Melgaço has enjoyed a bitter history of wars but still has maintained character from its medieval past. The tower with its ruined fortification overlooking the town dates back to 1197. To the south of Melgaço is the Spa named Termas do Peso. Also to the south is the small hamlet of Fiães at 700 metres and with a Cistercian Monastery from the 12th Century. Even further to the south of this hamlet is Castro Laboreiro with a church dating back to the 9th Century. Just to the south of this town at 1.033 metres is a castle from before the 11th Century. They all have a balcony and an en suite bathroom, To the northeast is the access road to the southern part of the Gerêz Nature Reserve of 72.000 hectares and its small Spa town of Caldas de Gerêz. For any nature lover this Reserve is worthy of a visit. The sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aperta in this park is the second most famous location for pilgrims in Portugal with over 2.5 million visitors a year. They also have satellite TV, and above all, a work desk and central heating, To the east is the town of Póvoa de Lanhosa, which is crowned with a castle on a massive rock that is believed to have existed as a building in a different form over 2000 years ago. Today it is a ruin and hides in its past history many tragic deeds. One particular macabre drama that is recorded is when one of its owner, Rodrigo Gonçalves Pereira, upon discovering the infidelity of his wife he promptly set fire to the interior of the castle burning all the humans and livestock including his wife. To the west of this town is the 11th Century Benedictine Mosteiro de Tibães that was rebuilt in the 19th Century and is at present undergoing further interior construction. There is also a bar and a terrace, Description of Chaves. The guest house has a tour desk, and above all, and a laundry service is available at an extra cost, Directly to the north of Braga is the Spa of Caldelas. near to this town and in the direction of Outeiro is a interesting 14th Century building., On the road southwest and halfway between Bragança and Vila Real is the town of Mirandela. In 1433 the town grew in importance when it was given by King Manuel to his trusted aide Álvares Pires de Távora. However, the Távora family was later to fell foul of the Marquês de Pombal and the royal family who ordered the complete Tavora family to be executed in 1758 for plotting treason against the then King José I., Some 4 kilometres to the northwest of Braga is a simple and at the same time most interesting Chapel of São Frutuoso de Montélios. This chapel is one of the few remaining pre-Romanesque buildings still standing in Portugal. Originally built about the 7th Century and later destroyed by the Moors, it was then reconstructed on the same site in the 11th Century., On your way to the Douro valley, make sure to pass through Amarante. Sit for a while and admire the old bridge over the River Tâmega while you sample some of the region’s sweets and desserts. Papos de Anjo, Brisas do Tâmega and bolos de S. Gonçalo are particularly delicious., The City is bordered to the west by the beautiful remote region of Serra do Barroso and its ancient main town of Montalegre. Here the visitor will find a 27 meter high Keep of the 14th Century ruined castle. The small village of Boticas with its associated Spa of Carvalheiros is located closer to Chaves and has an unusual custom. During the invasion of the French army in 1809 the local inhabitants buried their locally produced wine in the ground rather than let it fall into the hands of the enemy. After the departure of these invaders the wine was retrieved and found to have improved in quality. It was nicknamed “vinho dos mortos”, which is wine of the dead,, and this practice has now become a routine leaving the wine underground for a period of about two years. The popular Spa Town of Vidago lies to the southwest of Chaves and even further south is another popular Spa named Pedras Salgadas. At the small village of Soutelo that lies close to the west of Chaves is a strange 50 meter long boulder covered in strange hieroglyphs that perhaps is from Celtic times.
