Pension Marbella

Roca Negra, 11, 17480 Roses

All the rooms at the the hotel have a balcony, very much appreciated, fan and safe, A twenty-minute walk away through place des Esplanades, crowning the hill that dominates the southern part of the old town, is the Palais des Rois de Majorque, which is daily: June–Sept 10am–6pm; Oct–May 9am–5pm; €3, . Although Vauban's walls surround it now, the two-storey palace and its great arcaded courtyard date originally from the late thirteenth century. Thanks to the Spanish–Moorish influence, there's a sophistication and finesse about the architecture and detailing – for instance in the beautiful marble porch to the lower of the two chapels – that you don't often find in the heavier styles of the north. Visitors appreciate the hotel is located in the Santa Margarita district of Roses, highly valued, just 150 metres from the beach and shops, From place de la Loge, rue St-Jean runs down to the fourteenth-century Cathédrale St-Jean on place Gambetta, which is Mon & Wed–Sat 10am–noon & 2–5pm, Tues & Sun 2–5pm,, its external walls built of bands of river stones sandwiched by brick. The interior is most interesting for its elaborate Catalan altarpieces, shadowy in the gloom of the dimly lit nave, and for the tortured wooden crucifix, known as the Dévôt Christ, in a side chapel to the south. Dating from around 1400, it's of Rhenish origin and was probably brought back from the Low Countries by a travelling merchant. Past the chapel, on the left is the entrance to the Campo Santo, one of France's oldest cemeteries, dating back some 600 years, which is same hours as cathedral, . It offers free Wi-Fi and a small outdoor pool, South of the cathedral, rue de la Révolution-Française and rue de l'Anguille lead into the close, dilapidated maze of the Arab and Romany quarter, where women congregate on the secluded inner lanes but are seldom seen on the more public thoroughfares. Here you'll find North African shops and cafés, especially on rue Llucia, and a daily market on place Cassanyes. At the heart of the quarter, the wide and grimy place du Puig is overlooked by a Vauban barracks converted into public housing. Just past it, at the top of a shady uphill street, is the elegant Catalan church of St-Jacques, dating from around 1200, on the edge of La Miranda gardens, which is July & Aug 8am–noon & 2.30–6.30pm; Sept–June 8am–noon & 2.30–5.30pm,, laid out on a section of the old city walls. It's from this church that the Procession de la Sanch sets out on Maundy, which is Holy, Thursday. The bar offers a range of drinks and cocktails, very much appreciated, as well as live entertainment, Finally, at 16 rue de l'Ange near place Arago, you'll find Perpignan's museum of art, the Musée Rigaud, which is Wed–Sun noon–7pm; €3.80,, dedicated to the work of the locally born portraitist Hyacinthe Rigaud, who became official painter to the court of Versailles in the early eighteenth century. The collection also includes works by Dufy, Maillol, Picasso, Tapiès, Appel and others. The private bathroom comes with a shower, The best place to begin your exploration of Perpignan is at Le Castillet, built as a gateway in the fourteenth century and now home to the Casa Pairal, which is daily except Tues: mid-June to mid-Sept 10am–7pm; rest of year 11am–5.30pm; €4,, an interesting museum of Roussillon's Catalan folk culture, featuring religious art, agricultural and pastoral exposés, and all sorts of local crafts. From the roof there is a great view of the dominant pile of Canigou, while to the northwest you may be able to pick out the Château de Quéribus, standing clear of its ridge. A short distance down rue Louis-Blanc you come to the place de la Loge, focus of the renovated and pedestrianized heart of the old town. Dominating the cafés and brasseries of the narrow square is Perpignan's most interesting building, the Gothic Loge de Mer. Designed to hold the city's stock exchange and maritime court, and decorated with gargoyles and lacy balustrades, its ground floor has been taken over by an incongruous fast-food joint. Side by side next door are the Hôtel de Ville, with its magnificent wrought-iron gates and Maillol's statue of La Méditerranée in the courtyard, and the fifteenth-century Palais de la Députation, once the parliament of Roussillon. Guests can enjoy typical Spanish dishes at the Hotel Marbella’s restaurant, and above all, situated next to the guest house, A good part of PERPIGNAN's population is of Spanish origin – refugees from the Civil War and their descendants. The southern influence is further augmented by a substantial admixture of North Africans, including both Arabs and white French settlers repatriated after Algerian independence in 1962. If you'd like to stay in a Perpignan hotel, this website has a lot. Roses is a popular resort on the Costa Brava, highly valued, just 5 km from the stunning Cap de Creus Natural Park, Thirteen kilometres to the south of Perpignan, on the way to the resorts of the Côte Vermeille and served by the same buses and trains, lies the town of ELNE. This small place once had the honour of seeing Hannibal camp at its walls en route to Rome, and used to be the capital of Roussillon. It was only overtaken by Perpignan when the latter became the seat of the kings of Majorca. Today, it's worth a stop for its fortified, partially Romanesque cathedral and extremely beautiful cloister, which is April & May daily 9.30am–6pm; June–Sept daily 9.30am–7pm; Oct daily 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; Nov–March daily except Tues 9.30am–noon & 2–5pm; €4, . Though only one side of the cloister is strictly Romanesque, immaculately carved with motifs such as foliage, lions, goats and biblical figures, the three fourteenth-century Gothic ones have been made to harmonize perfectly. It's the best introduction to Roussillon Romanesque you could want, especially if you're planning to visit places like Serrabonne and St-Michel-de-Cuxa further west. Below the cathedral there are still a few streets of the old town left, twisting back down to the drab and unremarkable modern development. The charming, and above all, whitewashed town of Cadaques is approximately 12 km away and guests can visit Dali’s unique house, Perhaps more interesting, 15km north and served by several trains a day, is the Château de Salses, which is April, May & Oct daily 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; June & Sept 9.30am–6.30pm; July & Aug 9.30am–7pm; Nov–March 10am–noon & 2–5pm; €5.50, . Built by the Catalans in the early fifteenth century, it was one of the first forts to be designed with a ground-hugging profile to protect it from artillery fire, and its superior design apparently put Vauban's nose so out of joint that he wanted it demolished, a task that proved impossible., Prime minister: Albert Pintat, The heart of Barcelona which consists of a long very crowded street with fascinating shops of all types, sidewalk cafés and street entertainers. The world meets in La Rambla, Another place, with not so much to see but very interesting from an anthropological point of view, is the vine-girt village of Tautavel, 25km northwest off the St-Paul-de-Fenouillet road. In 1971 the remains of the oldest known European human being – dated to around 450,000 BC – were discovered near the village, and a reconstruction of the skull is on display in the village's Musée de la Préhistoire, which is Jan & Dec Sun, Mon & hols 1.30–5.30pm; Feb, Mar, Oct & Nov daily 1.30–5.30pm; April–June & Sept daily 10am–12.30pm & 1.30–7pm; July & Aug daily 10am–8pm; €7,, along with various finds from the cave where he was unearthed, the Caune d'Arago, a few kilometres north, which can itself be visited in July and August, which is daily 10am–noon & 12.30–5.30pm, or by arrangement with the museum. The local wines are good, too, along with those of Estagel and Rivesaltes, and can be sampled at the numerous domaines in the area., The party lost its absolute majority but won exactly half of the seats in the 28-member parliament. The centre-left Social Democrats have 12. The next elections are expected in March/April 2009.
