Hôtel Athena2 Star Hotel

18 rue de la Haye, 34300 Le Cap D'agde

Guest review score

7.7 from 48 reviews

Rooms at the Athena are air conditioned and equipped with a radio and a flat-screen TV, Montpellier's city centre – the old town – is small, compact, architecturally homogeneous, full of charm and teeming with life, except in July and August when the students are on holiday and everyone else is at the beach. And the place is almost entirely pedestrianized, so you can walk the narrow streets without looking anxiously over your shoulder. Hotel Athena is located between the Cap d’Agde and Agde, highly valued, on the Mediterranean coast, Although there's no real separatist impetus among French Catalans today, their sense of identity is still strong: the language is very much alive, and the national colours of yellow and red are much in evidence wherever you go. The Pic du Canigou, which completely dominates Roussillon, seems much larger in presence than its actual 2784m, and it remains a powerful symbol of Catalan nationalism, attracting hordes of Catalans from Barcelona to celebrate the summer solstice. And in the little town of Prades, which, as the place of exile from Franquista Spain of the cellist Pau Casals, became a symbol of Catalan resistance. It is just a 5-minute drive from the beach and the Golf du Cap d’Agde and has an outdoor swimming pool, At the hub of the city's life, joining the old part to its newer accretions, is place de la Comédie, or "L'Oeuf" to the initiated. This colossal, oblong square, paved with cream-coloured marble, has a fountain at its centre and cafés either side. One end is closed by the Opéra, an ornate nineteenth-century theatre; the other opens onto the Esplanade, a beautiful tree-lined promenade which ends in the Corum concert hall, dug into the hillside and topped off in pink granite, with splendid views from the roof. The city's most trumpeted museum, the Musée Fabre, has closed for long-term renovation. Visitors will have to wait until 2006 to view its large and historically important collection of seventeenth- to nineteenth-century French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Flemish and English painting, including works by Delacroix, Raphael, Jan van Steen and Veronese. Fre Wi-Fi is available in public areas, The area that makes up the eastern fringe of the Pyrenees and the flatter stretch of land down to the Mediterranean coast is known as Roussillon, or French Catalonia. Catalan power first came into its own in the tenth century under the independent counts of Barcelona, who then became kings of Aragon as well in 1162. They attempted to create a joint power base with Occitan France under the counts of Toulouse, but that came to an unhappy end with the death of Pedro II at the battle of Muret in 1213, when he came to the aid of Raymond VI of Toulouse against Simon de Montfort during the anti-Cathar crusade. The height of Catalan power was reached in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Franco-Catalan frontier was fixed along the base of the Corbières hills north of Perpignan. But Jaime I made the mistake of dividing his kingdom between his two sons at his death. What is now the French part became the kingdom of Majorca with its capital at Perpignan, but, coveted by the rival brother, the king of Aragon, it sought alliance with the kings of France, who saw this as a splendid opportunity to straighten out their southern border, thus ensuring continuous squabbling that was only finally ended by the Treaty of the Pyrenees, negotiated by Louis XIV in 1659. Each room has a private balcony furnished with a table and chairs, After the treaty, the French began a ruthless process of Frenchification, which was successful in Perpignan where the bourgeoisie tended to identify their commercial interest with a central power; the mountain hinterland, however, was left largely untouched until modern times, when the collapse of traditional agriculture, the introduction of compulsory education and the devastation of the vineyards by phylloxera combined to drive the people off the land – a process which still continues today, albeit at a slower rate. Guests of the Athena Hotel are invited to relax on the garden terrace and there is a 24-hour reception and bar, Lower down the hill, on boulevard Henri-IV, the lovely but slightly run-down Jardin des Plantes, which is July & Aug Mon–Sat 8.30am–noon & 2–6pm; rest of year Mon–Sat 10am–5pm; free,, with avenues of exotic trees, was founded in 1593 and is France's oldest botanical garden. Across the road is the long-suffering cathedral, with its massive porch, sporting a patchwork of styles from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Inside is a memorial to the bishop of Montpellier who sided with the half-million destitute vine-growers who came to demonstrate against their plight in 1907 and were fired on by government troops for their pains. Above the cathedral, in the university's prestigious medical school on rue de l'école-de-Médecine, the Musée Atger, which is Mon, Wed & Thurs 1.30–5.45pm; free, has a distinguished academic collection of French and Italian drawings, while the macabre Musée d'Anatomie, which is daily 2.30–5pm; free, displays all sorts of revolting things in bottles. Close by is the pretty little place de la Canourgue, and, beyond, down rue d'Aigrefeuille, the old university quarter, with some good bookshops on rue de l'Université. The Athena provides free private parking and Hôtel Athena is a 30-minute drive from Beziers, Some 28km southeast of Montpellier, twenty minutes away by train, SÈTE has been an important port for three hundred years. Searching for a Sète hotelthis website has a lot of choices. The upper part of the town straddles the slopes of the Mont St-Clair, which overlooks the vast Bassin de Thau, breeding ground of mussels and Oysters, while the lower part is intersected by waterways lined with tall terraces and seafood restaurants. It has a lively workaday bustle in addition to its tourist activity, at its height during the summer joutes nautiques, which is waterjousting, ., The crowded and vibrant pedestrian streets are scattered with café tables. A short climb up from the harbour is the cimetière marin, the sailors' cemetery, where poet Paul Valéry is buried. A native of the town, he called Sète his "singular island", and the Musée Paul Valéry, in rue Denoyer, which is July & Aug daily 10am-6pm; Sept–June Wed–Mon 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €3.05,, opposite the cemetery, has a room devoted to him, as well as a small but strong collection of modern French paintings. If you're feeling energetic, you should keep going up the hill, through the pines to the top, for a view that's fabulous when it's not engulfed in sea mist. Below the sailors' cemetery, and neatly poised above the water, is Vauban's Fort St-Pierre, now home to an open-air theatre. Over on the west side of the hill, George Brassens, associate of Sartre and the radical voice of a whole French generation, is buried in the Cimetière le Py, in spite of his song Plea to be Buried on the Beach at Sète. In Éspace Brassens, which is July & Aug daily 10am–noon & 2–6pm; Sept–June Tues–Sun 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €10.53,, overlooking the cemetery, the locally born singer-songwriter lives again through his words and music, narrating his life-story in French on the museum's headsets., © William Shen wwshen.com, Most of the region's attractions are easily reached from the region's one major town, Perpignan. The coast and immediate hinterland above the Spanish frontier is beautiful, though predictably crowded, and the finest spots are in the Tech and Têt valleys which cut back west into the Pyrenees, where you can view the Romanesque monasteries of Serrabonne, St-Michel-de-Cuxa and St-Martin-du-Canigou, Vauban's fortress town of Villefranche-de-Conflent, From the north side of L'Oeuf, rue de la Loge and rue Foch, opened in the 1880s in Montpellier's own Haussmann-izing spree, slice through the heart of the old city. Either side of them, a maze of narrow lanes slopes away to the encircling modern boulevards. Few buildings survive from before the 1622 siege, but the city's busy bourgeoisie quickly made up for the loss, proclaiming their financial power in lots of austere seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mansions. Known as "Lou Clapas", which is rubble,, the area is rapidly being restored and gentrified. It's a pleasure to wander through and come upon the secretive little squares like place St-Roch, place St-Ravy and place de la Canourgue.
