Hotel Capao3 Star Hotel

8

Plage Richelieu Centre, 34300 Cap D'agde

Guest review score

8 from 52 reviews

Hotel Capao features a champagne bar that offers a wide range of champagnes and cocktails and a bar/restaurant on the beach open from 12:00 to 16:00 that offers a wide variety of snacks, very much appreciated, salads and grilled meat and fish, Most of the region's attractions are easily reached from the region's one major town, Perpignan. The coast and immediate hinterland above the Spanish frontier is beautiful, though predictably crowded, and the finest spots are in the Tech and Têt valleys which cut back west into the Pyrenees, where you can view the Romanesque monasteries of Serrabonne, St-Michel-de-Cuxa and St-Martin-du-Canigou, Vauban's fortress town of Villefranche-de-Conflent. Located on the beach, highly valued, the hotel offers spacious and cosy rooms, 8 of which are duplex rooms for families with a balcony and a sea view or swimming pool, The crowded and vibrant pedestrian streets are scattered with café tables. A short climb up from the harbour is the cimetière marin, the sailors' cemetery, where poet Paul Valéry is buried. A native of the town, he called Sète his "singular island", and the Musée Paul Valéry, in rue Denoyer, which is July & Aug daily 10am-6pm; Sept–June Wed–Mon 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €3.05,, opposite the cemetery, has a room devoted to him, as well as a small but strong collection of modern French paintings. If you're feeling energetic, you should keep going up the hill, through the pines to the top, for a view that's fabulous when it's not engulfed in sea mist. Below the sailors' cemetery, and neatly poised above the water, is Vauban's Fort St-Pierre, now home to an open-air theatre. Over on the west side of the hill, George Brassens, associate of Sartre and the radical voice of a whole French generation, is buried in the Cimetière le Py, in spite of his song Plea to be Buried on the Beach at Sète. In Éspace Brassens, which is July & Aug daily 10am–noon & 2–6pm; Sept–June Tues–Sun 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €10.53,, overlooking the cemetery, the locally born singer-songwriter lives again through his words and music, narrating his life-story in French on the museum's headsets. The copious and varied breakfast is served from 07:30 to 10:30 in the restaurant room or in your room, © William Shen wwshen.com. Hotel Capao’s restaurant, highly valued, Capaô Beach, offers a neat décor where you can appreciate local Mediterranean cuisine based on fresh sea food and a large wine selection, A short walk from place Jean-Jaurès, the Hôtel de Varenne, on place Pétrarque, houses two local history museums of somewhat specialized interest, the Musée de Vieux Montpellier, which is Tues–Sat 9.30am–noon & 1.30–5pm; free,, concentrating on the city's history, and the more interesting, private Musée Fougau on the top floor, which is Wed & Thurs 3–6.30pm; free,, dealing with the folk history of Languedoc and things Occitan. Off to the right, the lively little rue des Trésoriers-de-France has one of the best seventeenth-century houses in the city, the Hôtel Lunaret, at no. 5, while round the block on rue Jacques Coeur you'll find the Musée Languedocien, which is July–Sept Mon–Sat 2–6pm; Oct–June Mon–Sat 2–5pm; €5,, which houses a very mixed collection of Greek, Egyptian and other antiquities. Between the Mediterranean Sea and the countryside just inland from Agde, and above all, the hotel is the only hotel with direct access to the beach, Although there's no real separatist impetus among French Catalans today, their sense of identity is still strong: the language is very much alive, and the national colours of yellow and red are much in evidence wherever you go. The Pic du Canigou, which completely dominates Roussillon, seems much larger in presence than its actual 2784m, and it remains a powerful symbol of Catalan nationalism, attracting hordes of Catalans from Barcelona to celebrate the summer solstice. And in the little town of Prades, which, as the place of exile from Franquista Spain of the cellist Pau Casals, became a symbol of Catalan resistance., The area that makes up the eastern fringe of the Pyrenees and the flatter stretch of land down to the Mediterranean coast is known as Roussillon, or French Catalonia. Catalan power first came into its own in the tenth century under the independent counts of Barcelona, who then became kings of Aragon as well in 1162. They attempted to create a joint power base with Occitan France under the counts of Toulouse, but that came to an unhappy end with the death of Pedro II at the battle of Muret in 1213, when he came to the aid of Raymond VI of Toulouse against Simon de Montfort during the anti-Cathar crusade. The height of Catalan power was reached in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Franco-Catalan frontier was fixed along the base of the Corbières hills north of Perpignan. But Jaime I made the mistake of dividing his kingdom between his two sons at his death. What is now the French part became the kingdom of Majorca with its capital at Perpignan, but, coveted by the rival brother, the king of Aragon, it sought alliance with the kings of France, who saw this as a splendid opportunity to straighten out their southern border, thus ensuring continuous squabbling that was only finally ended by the Treaty of the Pyrenees, negotiated by Louis XIV in 1659., From the north side of L'Oeuf, rue de la Loge and rue Foch, opened in the 1880s in Montpellier's own Haussmann-izing spree, slice through the heart of the old city. Either side of them, a maze of narrow lanes slopes away to the encircling modern boulevards. Few buildings survive from before the 1622 siege, but the city's busy bourgeoisie quickly made up for the loss, proclaiming their financial power in lots of austere seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mansions. Known as "Lou Clapas", which is rubble,, the area is rapidly being restored and gentrified. It's a pleasure to wander through and come upon the secretive little squares like place St-Roch, place St-Ravy and place de la Canourgue., On the hill at the end of rue Foch, from which the royal artillery bombarded the Protestants in 1622, the formal gardens of the Promenade du Peyrou look out across the city and away to the Pic St-Loup, which dominates the hinterland behind Montpellier, with the distant smudge of the Cévennes beyond. At the farther end a swagged and pillared water tower marks the end of an eighteenth-century aqueduct modelled on the Pont du Gard. Beneath the grand sweep of its double tier of arches is a daily fruit and veg market and a huge Saturday flea market. At the city end of the promenade, a vainglorious triumphal arch shows Louis XIV-Hercules stomping on the Austrian eagle and the English lion, tactlessly reminding the locals of his victory over their Protestant "heresy"., First left off rue de la Loge is Grande-Rue Jean-Moulin, where Moulin, hero of the Resistance, lived at no. 21. To the left, at no. 32, the present-day Chamber of Commerce is located in one of the finest eighteenth-century hôtels, the Hôtel St-Côme, originally built as a demonstration operating theatre for medical students. On the opposite corner, rue de l'Argenterie forks up to place Jean-Jaurès. This square is a nodal point in the city's student life: on fine evenings between 6pm and 7pm you get the impression that the half of the population not in place de la Comédie is sitting here and in the adjacent place du Marché-aux-Fleurs. Through the Gothic doorway of no. 10 of place Jean-Jaurès, is the so-called palace of the kings of Aragon, who ruled Montpellier for a stretch in the thirteenth century. Close by is the Halles Castellane, a graceful, iron-framed market hall.
