Hotel Gil De France2 Star Hotel

10 Avenue Des Alizés, 34300 Cap D'agde

Guest review score

7.4 from 58 reviews

Guests are sure to enjoy Hotel Gil De France’s balnéo area that features a hamman and offers massages, At the hub of the city's life, joining the old part to its newer accretions, is place de la Comédie, or "L'Oeuf" to the initiated. This colossal, oblong square, paved with cream-coloured marble, has a fountain at its centre and cafés either side. One end is closed by the Opéra, an ornate nineteenth-century theatre; the other opens onto the Esplanade, a beautiful tree-lined promenade which ends in the Corum concert hall, dug into the hillside and topped off in pink granite, with splendid views from the roof. The city's most trumpeted museum, the Musée Fabre, has closed for long-term renovation. Visitors will have to wait until 2006 to view its large and historically important collection of seventeenth- to nineteenth-century French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Flemish and English painting, including works by Delacroix, Raphael, Jan van Steen and Veronese. The Hotel Gil de France is located in Cap d’Agde, highly valued, just a few kilometres from the naturist village and close to Montpellier, From the north side of L'Oeuf, rue de la Loge and rue Foch, opened in the 1880s in Montpellier's own Haussmann-izing spree, slice through the heart of the old city. Either side of them, a maze of narrow lanes slopes away to the encircling modern boulevards. Few buildings survive from before the 1622 siege, but the city's busy bourgeoisie quickly made up for the loss, proclaiming their financial power in lots of austere seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mansions. Known as "Lou Clapas", which is rubble,, the area is rapidly being restored and gentrified. It's a pleasure to wander through and come upon the secretive little squares like place St-Roch, place St-Ravy and place de la Canourgue. Open all year round, and above all, Hotel Gil De France offers cosy, air-conditioned rooms equipped with modern en suite facilities, free Wi-Fi internet access and satellite TV Canal +, Montpellier's city centre – the old town – is small, compact, architecturally homogeneous, full of charm and teeming with life, except in July and August when the students are on holiday and everyone else is at the beach. And the place is almost entirely pedestrianized, so you can walk the narrow streets without looking anxiously over your shoulder. Gil de France is the perfect base from which to enjoy the local beaches and surrounding area of Cap d’Agde, Some 28km southeast of Montpellier, twenty minutes away by train, SÈTE has been an important port for three hundred years. Searching for a Sète hotelthis website has a lot of choices. The upper part of the town straddles the slopes of the Mont St-Clair, which overlooks the vast Bassin de Thau, breeding ground of mussels and Oysters, while the lower part is intersected by waterways lined with tall terraces and seafood restaurants. It has a lively workaday bustle in addition to its tourist activity, at its height during the summer joutes nautiques, which is waterjousting, . The restaurant overlooks an exotic patio and the heated swimming pool and serves traditional French cuisine prepared with quality fresh products, The crowded and vibrant pedestrian streets are scattered with café tables. A short climb up from the harbour is the cimetière marin, the sailors' cemetery, where poet Paul Valéry is buried. A native of the town, he called Sète his "singular island", and the Musée Paul Valéry, in rue Denoyer, which is July & Aug daily 10am-6pm; Sept–June Wed–Mon 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €3.05,, opposite the cemetery, has a room devoted to him, as well as a small but strong collection of modern French paintings. If you're feeling energetic, you should keep going up the hill, through the pines to the top, for a view that's fabulous when it's not engulfed in sea mist. Below the sailors' cemetery, and neatly poised above the water, is Vauban's Fort St-Pierre, now home to an open-air theatre. Over on the west side of the hill, George Brassens, associate of Sartre and the radical voice of a whole French generation, is buried in the Cimetière le Py, in spite of his song Plea to be Buried on the Beach at Sète. In Éspace Brassens, which is July & Aug daily 10am–noon & 2–6pm; Sept–June Tues–Sun 10am–noon & 2–6pm; €10.53,, overlooking the cemetery, the locally born singer-songwriter lives again through his words and music, narrating his life-story in French on the museum's headsets. It also caters for family dinners and small receptions, © William Shen wwshen.com., After the treaty, the French began a ruthless process of Frenchification, which was successful in Perpignan where the bourgeoisie tended to identify their commercial interest with a central power; the mountain hinterland, however, was left largely untouched until modern times, when the collapse of traditional agriculture, the introduction of compulsory education and the devastation of the vineyards by phylloxera combined to drive the people off the land – a process which still continues today, albeit at a slower rate., On the hill at the end of rue Foch, from which the royal artillery bombarded the Protestants in 1622, the formal gardens of the Promenade du Peyrou look out across the city and away to the Pic St-Loup, which dominates the hinterland behind Montpellier, with the distant smudge of the Cévennes beyond. At the farther end a swagged and pillared water tower marks the end of an eighteenth-century aqueduct modelled on the Pont du Gard. Beneath the grand sweep of its double tier of arches is a daily fruit and veg market and a huge Saturday flea market. At the city end of the promenade, a vainglorious triumphal arch shows Louis XIV-Hercules stomping on the Austrian eagle and the English lion, tactlessly reminding the locals of his victory over their Protestant "heresy"., Thirteen kilometres to the south of Perpignan, on the way to the resorts of the Côte Vermeille and served by the same buses and trains, lies the town of ELNE. This small place once had the honour of seeing Hannibal camp at its walls en route to Rome, and used to be the capital of Roussillon. It was only overtaken by Perpignan when the latter became the seat of the kings of Majorca. Today, it's worth a stop for its fortified, partially Romanesque cathedral and extremely beautiful cloister, which is April & May daily 9.30am–6pm; June–Sept daily 9.30am–7pm; Oct daily 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; Nov–March daily except Tues 9.30am–noon & 2–5pm; €4, . Though only one side of the cloister is strictly Romanesque, immaculately carved with motifs such as foliage, lions, goats and biblical figures, the three fourteenth-century Gothic ones have been made to harmonize perfectly. It's the best introduction to Roussillon Romanesque you could want, especially if you're planning to visit places like Serrabonne and St-Michel-de-Cuxa further west. Below the cathedral there are still a few streets of the old town left, twisting back down to the drab and unremarkable modern development., Another place, with not so much to see but very interesting from an anthropological point of view, is the vine-girt village of Tautavel, 25km northwest off the St-Paul-de-Fenouillet road. In 1971 the remains of the oldest known European human being – dated to around 450,000 BC – were discovered near the village, and a reconstruction of the skull is on display in the village's Musée de la Préhistoire, which is Jan & Dec Sun, Mon & hols 1.30–5.30pm; Feb, Mar, Oct & Nov daily 1.30–5.30pm; April–June & Sept daily 10am–12.30pm & 1.30–7pm; July & Aug daily 10am–8pm; €7,, along with various finds from the cave where he was unearthed, the Caune d'Arago, a few kilometres north, which can itself be visited in July and August, which is daily 10am–noon & 12.30–5.30pm, or by arrangement with the museum. The local wines are good, too, along with those of Estagel and Rivesaltes, and can be sampled at the numerous domaines in the area.
