Guest review score

7.7 from 51 reviews

This superb home with its red, very much appreciated, wooden shutters is surrounded by mature gardens, This period also increased the city's population of aproximately 40,000 inhabitants, many of them suffered the plague's consecuences and the population diminished to 15,000. The Papacy period was also known as the Babylonian Captivity of exile, in reference to the Israelites' enslavement in biblical times. Before this period Avignon was a not very interesting town, but during this residence it become one of the most beautiful French cities. It was built the Pope's Palace, an imposing fortress made up of towers, other examples are the old churches as: St. Didier, St. Peter and St. Agricola, all of them were built or restored by Popes, cardinals and other dignataries. The papal return to Rome prompted the Great Schism, during which the antipopes Clement VII and Benedict XIII continued to reside at Avignon. Set in Luberon Park in Provence, highly valued, facing the beautiful perched village of Velleron, the the hotel, backs on to its very own woodland of oak trees, After this period Avignon continued to be ruled by legates as papal territory but Avignon was finally incorporated to France after the French Revolution. Now Avignon is the comercial capital of France, because of the trail transport, the silk and madder root trade and because it was the main provider of fresh market products in France. After the World War Two this city begun to grow in economic and culture, the Theater Festival was created and Avignon was elected a European City of Culture in 2000 year. The grain attics have been transformed into cosy bedrooms, and above all, with quality linen and antiques selected from local markets, * Pope Gregory XI. Free parking is available on site, Avignon is also called the second Rome because of the arrival of the popes in the 14th Century during the Babylonian captivity, it also was the residence of several antipopes from 1378 to 1408. After a plebiscite it was incorporated to France in 1791. Avignon is a full history city, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse département, located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, with a population of aproximately 85,935 people. The name of this city comes from the Celts who called the area The Avenio that means the Town of violent Winds. The restaurant is open in the evening and room service is also available, The era of the Popes, from 1376 to 1409, is the most important and significant in Avignon's history, six Popes took Avignon as their official residence, they were:. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is 5 km from away and Avignon is 20 km away, * Pope Clement V., * Pope Benedict XII, Though already a prosperous city on the Via Domitia, the main Roman road from Italy to Spain, Nîmes did especially well under Augustus. He gave the city its walls, remnants of which surface here and there, and its gates, as the inscription on the surviving Porte d'Auguste at the end of rue Nationale – the Roman main street – records. He also, indirectly, gave it the chained crocodile of its coat of arms. The device was copied from an Augustan coin struck to commemorate his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra after he settled veterans of that campaign on the surrounding land., Nîmes' great passion is bullfighting, and its ferias are acknowledged and well attended by both aficionados and fighters at the highest level. The wildest and most famous is the Feria de Pentecôte, which lasts five days over the Whitsun weekend. A couple of million people crowd into the town, which is hotel rooms need to be booked a year in advance,, and every Tom, Dick and Harry opens a bodega at the bottom of the garden for dispensing booze. There are corridas, which end with the killing of the bull, courses where cocards are snatched from the bulls head, and semi-amateur courses libres when a small posse of bulls is run through the streets and the daring try to snatch the cocards from their heads. In 1996, Nîmes witnessed the acclamation of the first-ever woman matador, Cristina Sanchez, though she took an early retirement in 1999, blaming the machismo of the profession. Two other ferias take place: one at carnival time in February, when the inflatable roof of the Arènes is pulled over for protection from the weather; the other in the third week of September at grape-harvest time, the Feria des Vendanges. The tourist office can supply full details and advise you about accommodation if you want to visit at feria time., Perhaps the most refreshing thing you can do while in Nîmes is head out to the Jardin de la Fontaine, France's first public garden, created in 1750, northwest of the centre at the top end of avenue Jean-Jaurés. Behind the formal entrance, where fountains, nymphs and formal trees enclose the so-called Temple of Diana, steps climb the steep wooded slope, adorned with grottoes and nooks and artful streams, to the Tour Magne, which is daily: July & Aug 9am–7pm; Sept–June 9am–5pm; €2.40,, a 32-metre tower from Augustus' city walls, with a terrific view out over the surrounding country – as far, it is claimed, as the Pic du Canigou on the edge of the Pyrenees. At the foot of the slope flows the gloriously green and shady Canal de la Fontaine, built to supplement the rather unsteady supply of water from the fontaine, the Nemausus spring, whose presence in a dry, limestone landscape gave Nîmes its existence.
