Guest review score

8.5 from 21 reviews

The owners will warmly welcome you in this pleasant setting, The area that makes up the eastern fringe of the Pyrenees and the flatter stretch of land down to the Mediterranean coast is known as Roussillon, or French Catalonia. Catalan power first came into its own in the tenth century under the independent counts of Barcelona, who then became kings of Aragon as well in 1162. They attempted to create a joint power base with Occitan France under the counts of Toulouse, but that came to an unhappy end with the death of Pedro II at the battle of Muret in 1213, when he came to the aid of Raymond VI of Toulouse against Simon de Montfort during the anti-Cathar crusade. The height of Catalan power was reached in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Franco-Catalan frontier was fixed along the base of the Corbières hills north of Perpignan. But Jaime I made the mistake of dividing his kingdom between his two sons at his death. What is now the French part became the kingdom of Majorca with its capital at Perpignan, but, coveted by the rival brother, the king of Aragon, it sought alliance with the kings of France, who saw this as a splendid opportunity to straighten out their southern border, thus ensuring continuous squabbling that was only finally ended by the Treaty of the Pyrenees, negotiated by Louis XIV in 1659. Hotel Les Grenadines is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, highly valued, in Languedoc Roussillon, After the treaty, the French began a ruthless process of Frenchification, which was successful in Perpignan where the bourgeoisie tended to identify their commercial interest with a central power; the mountain hinterland, however, was left largely untouched until modern times, when the collapse of traditional agriculture, the introduction of compulsory education and the devastation of the vineyards by phylloxera combined to drive the people off the land – a process which still continues today, albeit at a slower rate. Hôtel the hotel is a family-run, and above all, quiet and comfortable property located 150 meters away from the Richelieu Beach, First left off rue de la Loge is Grande-Rue Jean-Moulin, where Moulin, hero of the Resistance, lived at no. 21. To the left, at no. 32, the present-day Chamber of Commerce is located in one of the finest eighteenth-century hôtels, the Hôtel St-Côme, originally built as a demonstration operating theatre for medical students. On the opposite corner, rue de l'Argenterie forks up to place Jean-Jaurès. This square is a nodal point in the city's student life: on fine evenings between 6pm and 7pm you get the impression that the half of the population not in place de la Comédie is sitting here and in the adjacent place du Marché-aux-Fleurs. Through the Gothic doorway of no. 10 of place Jean-Jaurès, is the so-called palace of the kings of Aragon, who ruled Montpellier for a stretch in the thirteenth century. Close by is the Halles Castellane, a graceful, iron-framed market hall. Hotel Les Grenadines is an perfect starting point to discover the history of Cap d'Agde and all the attractions the surrounding area has to offer:vineyards, very much appreciated, authentic villages and the Canal du Midi, A short walk from place Jean-Jaurès, the Hôtel de Varenne, on place Pétrarque, houses two local history museums of somewhat specialized interest, the Musée de Vieux Montpellier, which is Tues–Sat 9.30am–noon & 1.30–5pm; free,, concentrating on the city's history, and the more interesting, private Musée Fougau on the top floor, which is Wed & Thurs 3–6.30pm; free,, dealing with the folk history of Languedoc and things Occitan. Off to the right, the lively little rue des Trésoriers-de-France has one of the best seventeenth-century houses in the city, the Hôtel Lunaret, at no. 5, while round the block on rue Jacques Coeur you'll find the Musée Languedocien, which is July–Sept Mon–Sat 2–6pm; Oct–June Mon–Sat 2–5pm; €5,, which houses a very mixed collection of Greek, Egyptian and other antiquities., Lower down the hill, on boulevard Henri-IV, the lovely but slightly run-down Jardin des Plantes, which is July & Aug Mon–Sat 8.30am–noon & 2–6pm; rest of year Mon–Sat 10am–5pm; free,, with avenues of exotic trees, was founded in 1593 and is France's oldest botanical garden. Across the road is the long-suffering cathedral, with its massive porch, sporting a patchwork of styles from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Inside is a memorial to the bishop of Montpellier who sided with the half-million destitute vine-growers who came to demonstrate against their plight in 1907 and were fired on by government troops for their pains. Above the cathedral, in the university's prestigious medical school on rue de l'école-de-Médecine, the Musée Atger, which is Mon, Wed & Thurs 1.30–5.45pm; free, has a distinguished academic collection of French and Italian drawings, while the macabre Musée d'Anatomie, which is daily 2.30–5pm; free, displays all sorts of revolting things in bottles. Close by is the pretty little place de la Canourgue, and, beyond, down rue d'Aigrefeuille, the old university quarter, with some good bookshops on rue de l'Université., While there are few memorable monuments to visit, Perpignan is an enjoyable city with a lively street life. Its heyday was in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the kings of Majorca held their court here, and it is from this period that most of its historical interest derives. Well placed on the main Mediterranean coast international lines of communication, it is much the best base for exploring the eastern end of the Pyrenees, and the Cathar, Thirteen kilometres to the south of Perpignan, on the way to the resorts of the Côte Vermeille and served by the same buses and trains, lies the town of ELNE. This small place once had the honour of seeing Hannibal camp at its walls en route to Rome, and used to be the capital of Roussillon. It was only overtaken by Perpignan when the latter became the seat of the kings of Majorca. Today, it's worth a stop for its fortified, partially Romanesque cathedral and extremely beautiful cloister, which is April & May daily 9.30am–6pm; June–Sept daily 9.30am–7pm; Oct daily 9.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm; Nov–March daily except Tues 9.30am–noon & 2–5pm; €4, . Though only one side of the cloister is strictly Romanesque, immaculately carved with motifs such as foliage, lions, goats and biblical figures, the three fourteenth-century Gothic ones have been made to harmonize perfectly. It's the best introduction to Roussillon Romanesque you could want, especially if you're planning to visit places like Serrabonne and St-Michel-de-Cuxa further west. Below the cathedral there are still a few streets of the old town left, twisting back down to the drab and unremarkable modern development., Although there's no real separatist impetus among French Catalans today, their sense of identity is still strong: the language is very much alive, and the national colours of yellow and red are much in evidence wherever you go. The Pic du Canigou, which completely dominates Roussillon, seems much larger in presence than its actual 2784m, and it remains a powerful symbol of Catalan nationalism, attracting hordes of Catalans from Barcelona to celebrate the summer solstice. And in the little town of Prades, which, as the place of exile from Franquista Spain of the cellist Pau Casals, became a symbol of Catalan resistance.
