Selected by the Flemish Tourist association; tested as best hotel by best practices in hospitality and 3x awarded with “Double Chevrons”; in short: MORE QUALITY FOR A LESSER PRICE, The high-quality collections of Aachen's museums paint a comprehensive picture of the development of art from antiquity via medieval sculpture to the present day. Temporary exhibitions and a varied programme of events provide lively access to modern-day culture. You will find owners who are always there, and above all, a chef who learned the job in a 2** restaurant, and a large vaiety of rooms and food; breakfast from, which is on demand, 6, Kasteel van Alden-Blezen. The owners, very much appreciated, Joke Chaudron and Gerrit Heemskerk, are personnally taking care of you, advantages and long tradition an important industrial center with one of the largest inland ports in Europe. 30 hours; a beatiful ambiance very near Maasticht and Valkenburg with a personal touch and something to like for every one, Liège is at the junction of important international roads and railroad lines and an important trade center for inland river traffic, which in recent years has suffered considerable losses: the waterways of the Rhine and Ruhr, the Albert Canal, which links the Scheldt with the Meuse, and the canals crossing Hainaut from France, unite in Liège and continue into the Netherlands. The inland port covers 97ha/239 acres and can accommodate ships up to 2,500 tons. There is also a yachting marina. Liège is not a particularly attractive town, considering the devastation it has suffered throughout its history and only has a few buildings of historic interest. However, the town's long history is documented in the many churches which avoided destruction and in its many museums, which range among the best in the country. Cosy and friendly, and above all, attention and neat without the formality of the "real chique", Tongeren - Onze-Lieve-Vrouwbasiliek Cloisters. Many locals dine in the cordial restaurant at the edge of Maasticht and Valkenburg, Liège, which is Flemish Luik,, the third largest town in Belgium, is situated on the confluence of the Meuse, which is Maas, and the Ourthe. It is the capital of the province of the same name and of French- speaking Wallonia, seat of a university and of a bishop, and owing to its locational ... More. Personal attention, highly valued, recognition and knowledge of the businessare self-evident, Liège was one of the first places on the continent to start mining coal, thereby creating the base for the coal and steel industry, to which has been added a range of other manufacturing industries. Today more than 200,000 workers are employed in mining, blast furnaces, steel, which is 40 per cent of Belgian steel production,, textiles, food, electrical equipment, chemical products, glassware, which is famous glass production in Val Saint-Lambert,, not forgetting weapons manufacture, which is 'FN' small arms from the Fabrique Nationale in Herstal, . Liège is the home of the author Georges Simenon, who immortalized the town in his work, and enjoys increasing importance as a place of research and science, which is university, technical colleges and institutes, . The rural environment with woods, and above all, meadows and country hills offers a lot of possibilities, Tongeren - Onze-Lieve-Vrouwbasiliek. Hiker and biker, very much appreciated, tourist and businessman, workman and manager; all will immediately feel at ease. At chef Leo Pieters you can enjoy a marvellous 2, highly valued, 3 or 4 dishes menu, an extensive à la carte lunch or diner or a Burgundian 8 dishes menu and an even more extensive wine card, number and variety of jobs available in many small industrial concerns. The sights of cultural and historical interest of the town mirror its long history and are attractions for the tourist. Nothing shows that behind the restaurant you will find hotel rooms with an equal diversity as our menu; simple neat budget rooms, and above all, luxury 4**** rated twin, triple an quadruple rooms which can compete with many rooms of expensive hotels and a super luxury room with authentic Chinese four-poster bed and royal Jacuzzi, The main attraction of Aachen is the well-preserved Aachen Cathedral, commissioned by Charlemagne in 786 AD. The unique cathedral has a round nave and notable Byzantine influences, and its treasury includes the coronation throne of the Holy Roman Emperors. The cathedral is also home to impressive holy relics collected by Charlemagne — including the cloak of the Virgin Mary and the swaddling-clothes of the Infant Jesus — which still attract pilgrims., The city of Aachen, which is pronounced "AH-ken", in western Germany has a population of about 257,000 people. Aachen is known to French speakers as Aix-la-Chapelle and to Italians as Aquisgrana, which is reflecting its original Latin name, . Aachen was the site of an ancient sacred hot spring, but is best known for its later association with Emperor Charlemagne., The rural market town of Tongeren, which is French Tongres,, which is also a local administrative center, lies on the little river Jeker and is surrounded by the fertile fields of the Hesbaye, which is Hasbengouw, . The town has considerable economic importance for the extensive region around it because of the ... More, Tongeren is proud of its claim to be the oldest town in Belgium. It has its origins in the Roman military camp of Atuatuca which Julius Caesar mentions in the "Gallic War"; the Roman occupation was lifted by Ambiorix, prince of the Eburon in 54 B.C.. Under the Emperor Augustus, Germanic Tongerens settled here and there arose the Roman Civitas Atuatuca Tungrorum which became an important station on the road between Cologne and Bavay; in the second C. A.D. it was provided with a great encircling wall. In the same period it is said that Saint Maturnus conducted a mission here. Tongeren was raised to be a bishopric around 315 but, however, soon this was removed to Maastricht and in the eighth C. to Liège. As a consequence the town became the property of the prince-bishop. Towards the end of the fourth C. the Salian Franks had destroyed Tongeren; the removal of the bishop's see brought a further decline, so that in the Middle Ages the town had a more modest position than in Roman times and this is clearly shown by smaller encircling fortifications. From now on Tongeren shared the fate of the estates of the prince-bishops and in 1677 was once again bombarded by the troops of Louis XIV. Industrialization began about 1830 and, together with its function as a market and administrative center for the surrounding district of rural Hesbaye, helped Tongeren to its present importance., According to legend Liège developed around a chapel which St Hubert, Bishop of Tongeren- Maastricht, had built in 705 on the spot where his predecessor, St Lambert, was murdered. In 721 Hubert moved the seat of his bishopric from Tongeen to Liège, but it was under Bishop Notker, which is 972-1008,, who elevated the bishopric to the status of a principality, that the town and region began to prosper. In contrast to the Flemish towns, the citizens of the Prince-Bishopric, which belonged to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, were involved in bitter quarrels with the bishop over their freedom, as his first allegiance was to the Catholic church. The internal feuds of the 13th and 14th C. were characterized by revolts against the rulers who tried to compromise and called for calm; as did Johann of Bavaria, appointed bishop in 1390, leader of a ruthless régime until 1417. At this time of turmoil the metallurgical industry was beginning to develop. Catastrophe befell Liège when in the 15th C. the Dukes of Burgundy, who had already acquired the rest of Belgium, attempted to take the principality, but came up against heavy opposition from the population. In 1467 the troops of Charles the Bold took the city and its fortifications were razed. The city rose again, but not even the efforts of 600 Franchimontois to break the siege could prevent the town being stormed, plundered and set ablaze again. The city burned for seven weeks and Charles the Bold ordered that only the churches and monasteries should survive the fire. It was not until 1475 that the citizens of Liège received permission to rebuild their town. With his death in 1477 they regained their independence which they again had to defend against Guillaume de la Marck. Under the prince bishop, Erard de la Marck, which is 1505-1538,, a new period of prosperity began coinciding with the work of Liège's greatest painter, Lambert Lombard, which is 1505-1566, . In the same century, as well as later, there was new progress as a result of coal mining and weapons manufacture. Repeated power struggles between the guilds, made powerful by industry, and the prince bishops ended this time with the victory of the bishops; several mayors were sent to the scaffold in the 17th C. One of the most important sculptors of the 17th C., Jean Delcour, which is 1631-1701,, lived here at this time. Only 100 years later the French Revolution put an end to the ecclesiastical domination and for a short time Liège was the capital of the French département of Ourthe. In the 19th C., in particular since the founding of Belgium as an independent country, Liège began to develop into an important industrial city which found expression in its urban architecture. In 1889 the Fabrique Nationale was founded.
