The Hotel Parador de Almeida offers spacious rooms, very much appreciated, each with cable TV and a private balcony, But from 1296 when king D. Dinis took it by force, and up until the 19th century, this peaceful historical village was a fort that suffered prolonged sieges. Its walls and bulwarks make it one of the most interesting fortresses in the world, where it is possible to observe the ‘hexagon’ technique of King Louis XIV of France’s military engineer, Vauban. Located within the city walls of historic Almeida, highly valued, the Hotel Parador offers 4-star accommodations within walking distance of the Almeida Castle Ruins and Fortress, Introduction to Transmontana. Fishing and nature excursions are available, Viewed from the air, this fortified town looks like a 12-pointed star, due to the shape of the bulwarks that surround it. Leisure activities include fishing, very much appreciated, horse riding, bicycle tours, and hot air ballooning, Almeida today is a quiet town near the Portuguese-Spanish border, surrounded by charming countryside, where you breathe the clean air of the plateau. The Parador’s on-site restaurant prepares regional delicacies including fish soup and almond pudding, Each angle of the polygon forms a lance-shaped bulwark, and amongst these stand other smaller ones, the ravelins. The highest point is 1.9393 metres but most of area is in the region of 1.500 metres above sea level The area known as Torre is in winter a limited ski resort whilst the road from here southwards takes the visitor down to Covilhã which is known for fine textiles produced from local wool. The whole region is made up of large rugged terrain and it is from here that the famous distinctive cheese “Serra” is made from the milk of ewes. The local farmers have bred a special race of sheepdog named after the area that is known for its hardy and protective qualities. Within the Serra da Estrela there are a number of small villages or towns reflecting the hard and rugged lifestyle of the inhabitants. None more so than Linhares, protectively guarded by towers and a medieval castle and within it a Roman Forum from which in olden time's local justice was handed out. To the south west tip of the Serra da Estrela is the village of Loriga in which the famous rebel leader Viriato, which is 180 BC - 139 BC,, is reputed to have originated. He led a large force of Lusitanians that took on the might of the Roman Empire in the southern Iberian Peninsular.
